Import Export Code (IEC) No - R R Padmanabhan, Director - Exim Academy

 Import Export Code (IEC) No

If one wants to see the effect of Ease of doing business efforts by the Government, it is in the issuance of IEC, one can feel it.  Gone are the days when one has to fill the form, TR6 Challan, file the same with the Regional authority but wait for their mere acceptance leave alone the issuance of IE Code.  Now they are things of the past.

An IE Code is like your driving license.  Just as with a Driving license, one can drive all over India, with an IE Code issued by the regional authority here in chennai, an IE Code holder can export of import in all seaports, airports and ICDs (wherever export or import is permitted). Now the procedure is very simple.

Along with the relevant information as per ANF, cancelled cheque and Address proof, apply online by paying a fee of Rs.200.00 and using digital signature key (Class 2 or 3).  The entire information is checked at the back end and in about 2 hours time, the IE code is issued electronically.  Gone are the days when we have to wait for days and weeks to get one!

Can we import or export without IE Code?

No export or import is allowed without a valid IEC.  But there are certain exemptions this condition.  In terms of para 2.07 of Handbook Procedures to the Foreign Trade Policy 2015-20 (since extended till now), the following categories are exempted from having IE Code:

Whenever there is any change in the form of organization, change in Directors/Partners or address, these changes have to be updated in the database of DGFT. A company may have a registered office, factory and numerous other offices all over the country, yet there can only be one IE code for the company.  So it is important that all the locations registered in the database of DGFT.

The validity of IE Code is permanent unless the IE code decides to surrender the same.
 Modification/Updation Validity of IE Code

However, in terms of recent notification issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) the details as available in their database of an IE Code has to be updated periodically every year between April and June 30th.  Failure to update even if there is no change in the details will entail freezing of IE Code.
